Located approximately 80 mi (129 km) from the Pacific coast, Roseburg enjoys mild weather through most of the year, rarely dropping below freezing, even during the winter months. Numerous rivers and streams in the area make it a popular fishing destination, with Pacfic salmon the prize catch here. Just 6 mi (10 km) south of Roseburg is Wildlife Safari, a 600-acre wildlife sanctuary that offers visitors a chance to meet animals in a natural habitat. Scenic views and photograph opportunities can be found as visitors drive down the Rogue-Umpqua National Scenic Byway, spanning a total of 172 mi (277 km) through the valley. Douglas County Museum features a collection of over 8,000 artifacts, presenting the stories and memories of Douglas County. Travelers can also visit the area's historic homes and districts, such as the Mill-Pine Neighborhood Historic District and the Douglas County Courthouse.
